Juniors … 12-year-old April Balzer is one of three of Werribee’s junior girl baseballers taking part in statewide coaching clinics.

TWO of Victoria’s most talented women baseballers are putting the fun back into the junior game with a series of under 14 clinics for girls.

National representatives Samantha Hamilton and Amy McCann initiated the junior competition at Doncaster Baseball Club last year.

The pair saw many talented young ladies leave baseball at a young age, having a reluctance to play in mixed teams and feeling they were not ready for the step into senior women’s baseball.

Three local baseballers – Tayla Whitney, April Balzer and Melissa Howe – are currently benefitting from the specialist

coaching and friendly environment of the clinics.

Tayla and April, both 12, compete for Werribee in mixed baseball, while Melissa plays in senior and junior teams at the club.

April recently returned from the first all-girl junior baseball tournament in Orlando, Florida, where she helped the Australian team win a silver medal.

The girls’ junior league is growing rapidly with girls participating with varied experience and skill levels.

The Saturday morning competition sees girls travelling from as far away as Bendigo and Morwell to Melbourne to participate.

Budding junior baseballers interested in the new competition are encouraged to contact Rosalyn Balzer on 0432 470 693.

Close call … Baseballer Susanah Mejak slides into the home plate for the Werribee Giants.

WERRIBEE Giants took out the inaugural Baseball Victoria girls’ under 15 inter club competition late last year.

The competition, one of the first of its kind in the country, saw four association teams battle it out for points over six weeks before the final was staged on Sunday, 10 December.

Werribee took on a combined Essendon/Doncaster outfit in the final, and was a comfortable 7-2 winner.

There are plans to expand the competition next year, with a series of clinics, trials and games to be held in February in the lead-up to the interstate junior girls’ championships in March.

For more information about Werribee’s under 15 girls program, contact Rosalyn Balzer on 0432 470 693.
